Practicing Mudbox

Image
Introduction When it comes to my project, there are two possibilities that I can use in order to create my final piece/s - 3DS Max and Mudbox. Although there is the option to use both which I will probably do anyway.  With already having decent knowledge at using 3D Max, I needed to increase my skills in Mudbox. At the time of writing this page, I have used it a few times already however I will need to get better for my final piece. Therefore I plan to practice with it extensively to produce the best outcome at the end.  To continue my practice, I decided to create a corn cob model to follow the time of year I am writing this (harvest/Halloween). The reference image that I will be using is to the right. Instead of doing the whole cob, I will be doing a section and running through my process of producing it. Doing a corn cob will be significantly harder than what I have already done so far due to the individual corn. With the added detail of each corn, I may have to simplify it...

Finalised Proposal

Overview When trying to decide upon my chosen subject, I wanted to continue down the lines of what I believe are my strong points as well as doing what I enjoy the most. Therefore I decided to focus on concept art and 3D modelling of characters and entities. As I will be doing both concept art and modelling, I can make my models from scratch and show the process in which I produce them. With this topic, I felt like I could go in multiple directions however the main two that I looked at the most were medieval and/or futuristic settings. I chose medieval as I am very familiar with it after mostly playing games based within that era and from my love of history, and futuristic as I feel like I can be very creative with it.  Although these themes don’t really sound compatible, I can either choose between them or I have the chance I can mix them together, for example, a medieval clothed robot like a mechanical knight. Combining the two themes will let me be very creative with the subject...

Project Inspirations

Project Inspirations When deciding on my chosen subject and theme, I decided to play some games that I find to be the closest to what I want to do. There are  a lot of games that would fit within my two themes however there were four in particular that inspired me the most. These games are; Elder Scrolls Online and ArcheAge (legacy/Unchained) for the medieval/fantasy setting and Stray and Tower of Fantasy for the futuristic. Elder Scrolls Online Although I've only recently gotten into playing Elder Scrolls Online (ESO), I do find it as a good inspiration for the theme that I wish to look at. ESO is a fantasy MMORPG with a medieval setting.  Released - April 2014 Developed by - ZeniMax Online Studios Published by - Bethesda Softworks Elder Scrolls Online 9 primary races The game is set in the world of Tamriel and it allows the players to choose between 10 races (Breton, Nord, Khajiit, Redguard, Argonian, Bosmer, Orsimer, Dunmer, Altmer and Imperial). All of these races, e...

Project Ideas

Image
Project Ideas With the specialism project being so broad, I could have gone for multiple things. Despite this, I decided to go for my strengths within game design - concept art and 3D modelling. Along with this, I will be primarily looking at character design and creation. Character creation is highly important in games as otherwise, most games would be unplayable. This only concerns the games that actually have characters of course. When looking at their designs, you can easily see that they follow the same aesthetic of the game itself. For example, you wouldn't see a soldier going to war in a WW2 game wearing casual clothes as it would seem completely out of place. Having a good design usually allows them to help tell the story as well. Continuing with the idea of characters following the game's aesthetics, you can find in a lot of games (typically in MMORPGs) that have outfits that you can add costumes and cosmetics on top of your armour. These are typically paid for or unl...
